Progressive Method
The journey begins with our Infant Family Focus Program, that provides vital direct services in the home to guide new parents the unique developmental needs of their blind /visually impaired baby.
Many babies who were not expected to live productive lives - including those with multiple handicaps - have learned to walk, talk, and thrive because of BCLC. A student's journey continues in our Early Childhood Center, where visually impaired preschool aged children learn alongside sighted children. The majority of BCLC’s Early Childhood Center graduates have mastered the skills needed for successful mainstreaming into public school Kindergarten.
Finally, our Outreach program provides the advocacy, coaching and training needed to ensure these children’s success in public schools from Kindergarten through High school Graduation. Services include Braille Instruction & Orientation and Mobility.
All along this journey to independence, the Therapy Services Department provides specialized service to increase students’ independence and support their skills in school.
Despite a 70% unemployment rate among blind individuals, many BCLC graduates have successful careers.
The mission of BCLC is clear - to help blind children reach the same destination as sighted children: independent adult living. This mission can only be achieved by stimulating each child’s natural desire to learn throughout their life.
Happily, becoming independent is the culmination of a journey many BCLC students arrive at year after year.
