International Day 2009

June 9th was International Day here at the BCLC, which is a day dedicated to expressing to the children all of the different cultures that each of them bring, and the unique features of those cultures.

The room was colorfully decorated with streamers and various artifacts from different cultures, such as bongos, cymbals, bells, clay pots, and lotus-plates from various Asian countries and the Middle East for the children to play with and feel (they especially loved the bells!).

All the children were circled up in the beginning to learn about what International Day represents, as well as where a few different classmates come from, and what things their different cultures have in common. They passed around apples, pineapples, peaches, pears, and other fruits for the children to touch and become familiar with; they even passed around different flags for the children to feel, flags with big and bright colors for the kids who have some range of the color spectrum.

Once everyone was done learning, it was time to experience the best part of every culture, food! A table had been set with different pastries, treats, and fruit from around the world. The kids also got to dress up with different pieces of clothing from other countries, and even make their own flags when they finished eating as a nifty little craft to top off their already exciting day. Thank you to the staff and families who participated in this wonderful celebration!
