| Farther Than The Eye Can See On Thursday, November 4, 2004 the Center hosted its Fall fundraiser with Erik Weihenmayer- the first blind mountaineer to successfully climb Mount Everest. The evening began with a VIP reception and book signing at the Grand Californian Hotel at Downtown Disney in a beautiful outdoor setting. From the reception, guests were escorted to the AMC Theatres for a special high-definition screening of his award winning and awe-inspiring film, "Farther Than The Eye Can See" which documented Weihenmayer's ascent of Everest in 2001. Erik addressed an audience of over 300 guests with his compelling and vivid account of ascending Everest. He even stayed on long after the screening had ended to sign more books and to speak with parents. Earlier in the day Erik joined several BCLC students and alumni at ESPN Zone where they tested their skills atop the indoor rock wall. Erik stopped for a picture with Jim Skvarla and his son Andrew (a BCLC alumni) before they were back at it again. It was a wonderful and personal experience for all of the students and their parents. Co-chairs Laura Blatchford and Jaimie Haver assembled a diligent and hard-working team which raised over $15,000 for the Center. A special thanks to all of those who made this event a great success! Special thanks to Erik and Michael Brown (Director and Cinematographer) for their inspirational account of an incredible journey. If you would like to find out more about Erik and his team visit www.climbingblind.org and www.touchthetop.com. There are still autographed copies of Erik's memoir "Touch The Top Of The World" available. Please contact Linn Morgan at 714.573.8888 Ext. 102 for further details. |
