The Youth Outreach program provides itinerant services to blind and visually impaired students in the public school system when school districts are unable to provide the services these students need in order for these students to achieve the same education as their sighted peers.
Our credentialed teachers are trained to work with visually impaired students by providing vision assessments, attendance at IEP's, direct instruction in Braille and computer skills, order textbooks (large print, Braille or on tape), assistive and adaptive devices (i.e., computer software, hardware, Braillers, closed circuit televisions), and inservice teachers and aids. The services our teachers provide are based upon the student's IEP goals and objectives.
Our Orientation and Mobility Specialists instruct blind and visually impaired students in safe and efficient independent travel skills as well as various daily living skills. They also work closely with classroom teachers and aids by providing information on safety issues within the school grounds, including the classroom and playground. The Orientation and Mobility Specialists may also work with the student's family, providing services at the student's home.
Our Mentoring program pairs blind and visually impaired high school students with our preschool students and other Youth Outreach students, to work on a one to one basis, becoming role models and to gain a positive experience in impacting the lives of others in a personal and professional way. This also allows our "menti's" to learn and grow measurably in specified ways, from their interaction with a more experienced, visually impaired mentor.
