Parent to Parent

The BCLC Parent to Parent Program utilizes the experience and knowledge of the parents of a visually impaired child to act as a mentor / source of information to other parents with a child with visual impairment.

Initially, parents are paired through a coordinator who considers similarities of culture, diagnosis (and school districts when appropriate). Parent mentors provide access to community resources and advocacy to those with whom they’ve been paired.
The following quote articulates the essence of our Parent to Parent Program:

"The need professionals are probably least able to fill is the need for social support. Meeting other parents of disabled children becomes very important to parents after they learn about their child's disability. Support provided specifically from parents of children having [similar] disabilities helps alleviate loneliness and isolation, and provides ‘hands on’ expertise, as well as offering capable role models."
(Seligman & Darling, Ordinary Families, Special Children, 1989)

Testimonial

In a typical pre-school setting, the children stared and stared at my daughter's eye patch.  It made her so uncomfortable – at two years old!!  At the Center, there was a little girl in her class with an eye patch, and so my daughter felt right at home.  Her vision has become much stronger. This was a gift from Blind Children's Learning Center.  Mom - Trisha Sullivan
