Mentoring

BCLC's mentoring program pairs a younger, visually impaired child with a blind or visually impaired older child. The mentor's greatest responsibility is to be a positive role model for the student entrusted to him/her.

Every week a different activity is planned, each with a particular goal in mind that facilitates the younger child's learning. Activities include onsite activities and field trips.  Students work on pre-academic and social skills development.

Sam Blatchford

Sam is 13 years old and this is his first time as a Mentor.  He says, “I like to mentor because it makes me feel good inside. We have fun and I like to help Jack. Plus, it gives me a break.”

Sam’s mom, Laura, added, “BCLC was a great place for Sam when he was little.  Being a Mentor is a great way for him to give back.  Sam is a very compassionate person and he gets to express that here with the younger students.”

Testimonial

In a typical pre-school setting, the children stared and stared at my daughter's eye patch.  It made her so uncomfortable – at two years old!!  At the Center, there was a little girl in her class with an eye patch, and so my daughter felt right at home.  Her vision has become much stronger. This was a gift from Blind Children's Learning Center.  Mom - Trisha Sullivan
