Orientation and Mobility

Our Orientation and Mobility (O & M) Specialists instruct blind and visually impaired students in safe and efficient independent travel skills as well as various daily living skills. They work closely with classroom teachers by providing instructional aids, information on safety within the school setting, classroom and playground.

Older children are introduced to recreational and social activities while maintaining their safety, including learning how to listen while using a cane. BCLC Specialists also work with students in the community on accessing public transportation, grocery shopping, running daily errands, managing a household and holding down a job.

BCLC has opened an Orientation and Mobility Lab to enhance student learning opportunities.

In a typical pre-school setting, the children stared and stared at my daughter's eye patch.  It made her so uncomfortable – at two years old!!  At the Center, there was a little girl in her class with an eye patch, and so my daughter felt right at home.  Her vision has become much stronger. This was a gift from Blind Children's Learning Center.  Mom - Trisha Sullivan
